Splasher 6 212 HP?

I just installed a rebuilt carb on the 212. She runs good on the flat but when I go up a good grade under a load she really dogs it. Before I put up the rebuilt carb I would go up that same grade at 50 MPH. I'm lucky if I make the same grade at 35 MPH. I looked in the book and it said the setting on the idle adjustment should be about 3/4 to 1 1/2 out. On the low speed circuit I could not find what the correct setting should be. When I talked to the guy and the carb shop he said 2-3 out. At this point the car starts right up and I thought I had it dialed in. I have the idle adjustment at 1 3/4 out and the low speed at 2 out. Any idea's?

I have the timming set the same as I did when she was running good. Maybe this could be part of the problem?

  • Sounds like this carb may be jetted too lean for your engine. Is it running warmer on a hard pull?
  • The plugs are a light greyish color. I'm trying to find out what is the consensus of what setting works, without getting to technical ( I don't know if the engine has ever been rebuilt and the mileage looks like it might be 156,000) Thanks.
  • I'm having overheating problems with the car already. She gets really hot after climbing the hill.
  • A lean fuel mixture will compound that problem

Also, have you checked the timing lately?

Who rebuilt your carb does not have the tools to set the metering rods, accelerator pump and the Carter book that gives all the numbers for the correct jets. I have all these books and tools to do the correct job. You do not just take it apart and install new gaskets, just won't work. Something is not correct inside your carb, as you say it ran good before you had it rebuilt. Metering rods have to be set with the correct tool. Walt.

perhaps i misread, but why are you discussing the idle circuit when you identified the problem you are having is in the run circuit? i had a similar problem two years ago. the carb shop sent me an overhaul kit and it included the wrong jet. the carb would not enrichen as the throttle opened. i never thought to check all parts against the master parts list..who needs to, it is a reputable company right??? live and learn, i always check the part numbers of needles and dimensions of jets. best of luck, regards, tom
