number one cylinder
attempting to start my 308 hudson motor achieved some firecracker backfiring. when i set up the plug wires i assumed number one cylinder was at the front of the motor next to water pump is this correct or is number one at the back next to the firewall ? is number one plug wire is at approx 0ne oclock on the distributer cap as it sits om the block . as well thanks for the help

Yes, #1 cyl is at the front of the engine, closest to the water pump. best way to check pos on dist cap is to bring # 1 up to TDC timing marks line up & both valves closed and see where the rotor is pointing. If this all checks out, you may have some valves stuck open. This can happen if the engine has sat idle for some time, especially in a damp climate. FYI if you don't already have the info, the firing order is 1 5 3 6 2 4 Ibelieve the rotor goes clockwise so from #1 you would have the wires going clockwise. Good luck.0
