Bring on the Paint

I finished the prep work on my 1950 Commodore Sedan today just in time to shoot the sealer and first coat of paint on the car, out in front of my shop. The mecury was just above 75 and the wind so calm that a feather fell stright to the ground. I am doing a two tone paint job with base-coat, clear-coat. The top and bottom will be an off white color (called Diamond White). It is somewhat close to the French White used in 1950. If the weather holds I will shoot the center in the morning--I am leaving to buy the paint, but I have not decided on the color yet........ decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Just for information sake -- what type paint are you using?

    Good luck!
  • Did you happen to buy this car from Jason @ Vintage Coach?

I use Ditzler Basecoat Clearcoat and no I did not buy the car from Jason. It is a local Utah Car.
  • O.K., thanx for info Brownie, Jay sold a 50 Com 8 sedan to someone in your area about 1&1/2 mos ago. Just wondered if it was you.

Well, that answers one question. The guy that I got my car from bought a 50 Commodore 8 from California. I saw the car when I picked mine up and it was in very good condition. It is in a top end restoration shop in Salt Lake City undergoing a complete restoration. Should be killer when it is done sometime next year.

Two part sealer. The sealer is matched to the paint that I used and I have had very good luck with the cars that I have painted over the years doing this. Back (40 years ago) when I was taking a body and fender class (back in the Emron days) we always used an enamel primer. Paints have changed so much in those years that I now stick with a single brand name and use the primer, sealer, reducer, ect. and products that they have. I have problems when I try to mix products and save money. Something funny always seems to happen?

I finished the top and the bottom with the white paint on Tuesday morning and pulled the tape. Did a light sand in the overlapping areas where the red is going and went down to get the red paint Wednesday morning when I found out that GM requires a "Royality" to use the color of red that I selected. Bummer!!!! I looked over a bunch of color charts and finally decided to step up to the plate and use the color that I originally selected (Not trying for original--close to original is good for this project.) Got set to spray on thursday but a front moved in with a bunch of wind. Today was much better and I got the red base coat down early and I have just finished pulling the tape and spraying the clearcoat over the whole car. I pushed it into the shop and will pull tape and take a few photos on Monday. ---for now it is off to play for the weekend....
