Is there a valve in the top of the radiator at the overflow. Water was coming out the overflow as the car was idling and I tapped the overflow on top of the radiator and the water stopped.

I wondered if there might be some sort of a valve where the overflow discharge point on top of the radiator that was sticking open.

  • The radiator cap acts as a relief valve to allow overpressure to escape from the radiator. You may need a new radiator cap.

If this is your '46 Hudson it would not have a pressure cap as standard, unless one has been fitted after.
  • I don't think you can pressurize the system up to 47 just by putting a pressure cap on. The little 'top hat' fitting at the center of the top tank which has the overflow pipe soldered to it , I believe is open to the atmosphere. This would have to be closed off and a more modern filler neck put on, with the overflow pipe hooked to it, to be able to pressurize the system. I don't think there is na valve in the 'top hat' just a baffle to keep the coolant from splashing out.
  • Don't try to fill the radiator all the way. Leave the top tank half empty to allow for expansion.
