Head Bolt Removal and other questions/ Splasher 6

I'm pulling the head on a 1940 Splasher 6 to remove the valves to replace the fiber camshaft spacer. Most of the head studs stayed in the block, with the nuts coming off, but about 4 came out as studs. Is there any special thing to do other than remove the nuts on the bench and then put the studs back in the block?
A few other questions:
1. What should the new homemade spacer be made from?
2. How does one determine if the camshaft bearings are worn?
Thanks..Paul.

  • you can buy the phenolic spacer for next to nothing from dale cooper. he is in the hudson club register. sincerely, tom
  • If the studs are in good shape other than coming out of the block I would soak them in penetrating oil and remove the nuts, on the bench. I would however replace all the nuts and washers with new ones. When replacing the studs use something like Loc-tite stud and bearing lube.
