1946 Turn Signal Relay

I am having YNZ make a wiring harness for my '46. I am going to add turn signals to it and YNZ is saying that I should have a turn signal relay. I dont have a turn signal relay and I called a couple of reputable people in the club for one and they say there is only the unit on the steering column and a flasher. I do find a relay on the schematic and in the parts book. Does anyone have any info on these? Or have one? Thanks,

Jeff

  • I have a 47 super six coupe and have just gone through this with YNZ. They asked me if I had the turn signal relay because they had never seen one and wanted the whole harness so that they would have a pattern. I sent them my harness complete with the turn signal switch, relay, and flasher unit. They rebuilt it and are sending it back to me. I know where another 47 is in a local junkyard I will check to see if it has the turnsignal harness including the relay you are looking for

I went to the local junkyard to see if that 47 Hudson had the relay you are looking for. Unfortunately it has aftermarket turn signals so it does not have the relay that you need. I will keep you in mind as I am restoring a 47 coupe with a Twin-H-308 and am cruising a lot of junkyards.

Jeff, that original relay is a special type just for that Hudson application, and I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding one. But if you're going to add aftermarket turn signals, no such relay is needed. I would just tell YnZ to give you separate wires for the left and right stoplight bulbs, all the way up to where they can enter the passenger compartment near the steering column. The wiring that comes from the turn signal switch can make the connection right there. Same for the front lights (original type fender lights or whatever you're going to use) Have them include separate wires from the bright filament connection on the lights and running back along the left fender along with the headlight wires, and long enough to reach into the passenger compartment behind the dash near the steering column; same area where the stoplight wires terminate.

Finally, have them give you a single wire of appropriate color to run from the "downstream" side of the stoplight switch up into the cockpit where the stoplight and front turn signal wires are. That wire and the other four are the only connections your turn signal switch will need, except for a power wire from the ignition switch or wherever. Doing this will make installation of an aftermarket turn signal switch simple and neat looking.
  • Thanks Guys!!

What I ended up doing was calling Vintage Coach and got turn signal guts from a later model 7 wire turn signal unit that will fit into the unit I already have so I wont need the relay. Thanks for going and looking at the parts car that was nice of you to go out of your way like that. I appreciate the help.
