Diff identification question

edited November -1 in HUDSON
Recently i was given a diff from a late 30s hudson.Stamped on the cover on the shaft side was what seems to be 4.11,which is the standard diff ratio.
So i thought i would check the diff on my 36T ute.The only stamped number i can see is either 5 or 6(bit hard to tell). My ute may well have the commercial 4.5 diff, but why would it not be stamped as such?
Also.is it possible to id diffs from the serial numbers on the inside?

  • count the teeth on the crown wheel & then divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. That gives you your ratio.

Skipster, to check ratio of the diff in the ute, jack up one back wheel, put a chalk mark on the tyre and the prop shaft. Turn the prop shaft by hand and count the number of turns of the prop shaft to one turn of the wheel. Being a ute, you may well have a 4.55 diff as you say.

Ahem, if you turn 1 rear wheel, because you're driving thru the spider gears, you'll have to turn it 2 revs and count the prop shaft to get the ratio.
  • 2 turns is correct. With one wheel off the ground, mark the tire and a mark on the ground. Now place a mark on the drive shaft with a mark on the housing, now have someone count the number of turns on the shaft while you make two revolutions with the wheel. You should have 4 turns plus the fraction, anywhere from one half to three quarters. Walt.

    G'Day Skip,

If you need a 4.1 Crown wheel & Pinion I think I have both in 6 stud and 8 stud to suit your ute here in Sydney.
  • Thanks ,will check out the one i have first. Hopefully it is 4.5,then i can swap it for 4.1.However the 3.5 ford diff option is intriguing. Thanks to all for the excellent info.

Hey Skipster, good to meet up with you at Warnambool. Sorry I never got round to riding in your vahicle, to check out that vibration. Remember, to check diff ratio, jack up one side rear wheel, turn the wheel exactly two revolutions, and count the turns of the drive shaft.
    Geoff.
  • Cheers Geoff, thanks for coming to the meet.
