Left front suspension on 1951 Hornet. Coil spring

The spring is rubbing (Squeeking!) on the rear of the frame surface that it passes through. I can even see fresh scrapes where the spring passes through the frame. The coil seems to be centered at the bottom, but the position of the shock absorber seems to indicate that it may not be centered at the top. However, I see nothing at the top that indicates a problem. The squeek can be caused by hand by just lifting or pushing down on the bumper. The squeek occurs in motion passing over even small bumps. How do I correct this?

  • Did you have the spring out? If yes, did you seat the bottem properly within the control arm? aLSO, At the top of the spring there is a rubber type piece, like a gasket, that fits between the top of the spring and the control arm. Maybe it is shot.

  • Taking it to the next step, perhaps the upper inner shafts/ bushings are worn out. In the extreme that could cause the upper A arm to shift cockeyed to the rear which could let the spring rub at the point you indicate. Irregardless, you're gonna have to dissassemble the suspension on that side to find the trouble. One more thing, has anyone else had the suspension apart recently? If so they could have gotten the upper inner shaft off center. The ends of the shaft are threaded as well as the bushings they screw into. The bushings are the part that have the zerk fittings screwed into the outer ends.
