12 volt conversion problems

I just bought a 52 hornet that was converted to a 12 volt system. It drove and started fine when I got it,however now the amp light stays on util I turn the key to start and then everything goes dead. When I turn the key to "off" the amp light goes on again. Can anyone advise? Thanks

    Uncle buck, check you battery terminals, make them clean and tight--
