can i change just one side of 53 windshield

my drivers side has a small crack. just wondering if i can just change it out without removing pass side. thanks, as always, for your knowledge. hr

If you don't already have a copy, do yourself a big favor & go to Alex Burr's Online Hudson Manual page and download the 1948-54 Hudson Body Service Manual. This will take the guesswork out of this job, and will also help eliminate the risk of cracking your new glass on installation. You will find it listed 11 items down under the 1948 heading.

This manual has the complete procedure for changing your windshield, as well as all the other body, and trim items on your car.

One other tip, since the sealing material that they suggest in the manual is no longer available, go to your local body shop supply, and get some 3M #08509 Bedding & Glazing Compound to use between the rubber windshield gasket, and the windshield opening. If they don't stock it, have them order it in for you. It comes in a 10oz caulking gun cartridge. This works great in conjunction with the rubber gasket, and stays soft & flexible. The main benefit is that if in the future, you have to remove it again due to another stone chip or crack, it will allow the windshield to be removed without damaging the rubber gasket.

NEVER use any of the new urethane windshield sealers designed for bonding in late model windshields, as they will not allow future removal without cutting, tearing up, or destroying your original rubber gasket.:pinch:

Additional Note: If the stainless trim has been removed from around the windshield, and rear window openings during body restoration, or repainting, the 3M Bedding & Glazing Compound also works great for sealing between this trim, and the pinch weld of these openings as described in the Body Manual.

thanks for the great advise. i looked at the online manual. i have a shop manual but not the body manual so i will prob buy one. i hate trying to look at a computer screen and then run out to car, i like a book. i doubt i change this out for quite a while. the crack is pretty small and doesn't affect driving, but i see a local parts car that has a good windshield so i may get it for future instillation. i will def print out your comment and keep for when i need it. thanks again, hr
