Question about finding TDC

Trying to find TDC on a 308 with the starter motor in place is a real neck buster. You just can't get a good straight on view at the timing mark and the pointer. Let's assume that the timing is set at zero, neither advanced or retarded. My question is when the points just barely start to open, is the piston at TDC or is it approaching TDC?

The piston should be at t.d.c. as a static setting, with the points just opening. This is sufficient to get an engine running, but you then need to set it with a timing light, as timing chain stretch can cause it to alter slightly when the engine is running. Set the timing to the left-most of the timing marks on the flywheel which is t.d.c.
