what is this part?

does anyone know what this is for?

it came in the trunk of a 49 super.......its about the size of the coil but not sure how it would mount if thats what its for.

any ideas?

It looks like a aftermarket starter gaurd. It bolted on using the two bolts that hold the starter to the motor. It protected the bendix drive. I have a new one that I have never used. Dont need it anymore with all the paved roads. Also helped keep out the slush and ice in the winter.

aaahh i didnt even think of that.....thanks a million thats been bugging me for awhile now sitting on my bench, every time i walk by it wondering wtf it is.... solved... now i can sleep at night. ha
