What car/engine combination do you have? Have you checked voltage to the solenoid? Starter? Grounds? Try putting a voltmeter between the engine block and the starter case, you shouldn't get a reading when the starter is operated. If you do , start scraping paint/ rust, or whatever there is between the engine and starter. Just a place to start. If it runs on the bench but stops on the engine with a load, it sounds like your not getting enough current to it. Good luck.
  • If you are still 6 volts, then you must have 6 volt battery cables, about 1.2 inch thick, 12 volt cables will not carry the amps you need. Battery ground, positive, to battery box, then to engine front motor mount. Clean all paint where cables attach, and starter to motor plate. If this does not do the trick, starter must be rebuilt, for if you buy a used one, it may also have to be rebuilt. Nothing gained. Walt.
