Got mine in Northeast Ohio yesterday. Memorized it already. If it gets any better than this I'll believe Sam and Mary Ann designed Hudsons in a previous career.

Because the normal mailing day was last Saturday (15th) and Monday was a postal holiday, delivery may be delayed a day or two.:( Most US 1st Class subscribers should receive their magazines by Monday the 24th. Thanks for your patience and kind words. Look for David Young's great photos of the New Zealand fall tour in this issue.

Thank you to all the contributers of articles in the WTN and to Sam for putting it all together in a good looking edition. Great to see older cars on tour.

Please take time to read and understand the article Quentin Roberts wrote about using the host hotel at national meets. Another Club I know of lost $49,000 on their national meet.

Very nice picture of President Aaron Cooper and his 1929 Hudson.

Thanks for the photo kudos Sam but they are not deserved. I'm merely the photo conduit as I was behind the wheel of the green/black 28 Essex Coupe all the trip & (despite what previous girlfriends have claimed) only have 2 hands , so none to spare for the camera work!!
Looking forward to getting this WTN in about 3 weeks.

I read Mr. Roberts column, and while I agree with most of what he said, I do take exception of his inference that those who opt for a cheaper motel are in some way defrauding the host chapter. There are those of us who scrimp and save just to make it to a National meet. I'll use myself as an example.

I live on $2500 a month - and, yes, you an do it, but there ain't much left over at the end of the month after bills and obligations are met. I personally would rather stay at the host hotel - at my age I really don't feel like driving a few miles to a cheaper motel for an afternoon nap. But, when is all said and done, that $15 or $20 a night difference in price might just make it possible for me, or someone else, to make the National. I would rather see someone at the meet, rather than sit home a miss out. In fact had I not been generously offered a ride and shared expenses I would not have been able to make the 2009 National - pure and simple it comes down to cash in the wallet.

When I went to the Seattle National in 2001 - I shared expenses, from Montana, with an HET member. But I had to drive from Maine to Montana. We booked a room on-line at a rate $15 a night cheaper than the club rate - and I'll step up and admit it. (By the way - I always thought that a group rate meant a rate lower than the going hotel rate. Am I wrong there??) Anyway, a senior member of the NorthWest Chapter pointed out to me that the price negotiated with the host hotel included charges per square foot for meeting spaces, banquet hall, etc - if that is true then Mr. Reynolds is wrong in saying these amenities are complimentary on the part of the host hotel.

Anyway, as I said, maybe it's not quite cricket for members to opt for cheaper rooms, but not all of them are trying to cheat the host chapter, as implied by Mr. Reynolds. You toss into the stew what you got handy. I'll be in OKC - but unless an expense sharing comes available I sure won't be at Gettysburg - $115 a night is way, way beyond my pocket book. I know, I know, Gettysburg is a great place for a National, but it's a tourist trap. You want to book a cheaper room somewhere you are probably going be 25 or more miles away. I already checked.

And, Paul, I'll say right here and now the O4 National you guys put on was one of the best ones that I've been able to attend. You all did a fantastic job.

(Of course having a room on the same level as the Hudson parking lot, yet just far enough be out of the main traffic flow, was a plus. LOL)

I particularly liked the article on the Souers'. I was fortunate enough to happen by the farm in the early 90's and was welcomed warmly. Good memory.

Mr. Roberts was "spot on" with his comments. Let's keep in mind that he not only is a long time, dedicated Hudson Club member who has worked on a lot of committees he also brings in the prespective of an "Inn Keeper" that is chartered to have a business plan that makes money. We all love these regional and national meets. We want to have the maximum amount of fun that we can have with our fellow Hudson friends. The goal of the committies (Regional and National) that I have helped with worked toward the goal of providing every possible "perk" we could for those who attend and doing it within the budget we were working with. That is why we do them and if it happens that there is not enough money to pay the bills it makes it difficult to continue the fun. By the way, here is a photo with Mr. Roberts and Patty Teague shot at an event that was hosted by him and I can assure you that he dipped into his own pocket to make this an event I will remember for the rest of my life.

Brownie, I'm not saying Mr. Roberts (my apologies for getting the name wrong the 2nd time in my first post) was wrong in his comments - my objection was to his inference that those who opt for a cheaper motel/hotel are cheats and frauds. My point was there are some of us who aren't "rich" people - who have to scrimp and save to participate in, not only National meets, but also other HET activities. I've been a member of HET for 41 years - most of which I didn't, and still don't, have a Hudson because of finances.

Let's not turn this great club into a "money" club where only those with money can participate. Ok. That isn't what the Hudson family is all about. We don't want to be Packard, Cadillac, or even Ford or Chevy people.

  • I feel the need to chime in here. I am the current president of the North Texas Chapter, your host for the 2011 INTERNATIONAL HET meet. While not the prime mover on organizing and bringing this meet to fruition, I think that I might be able to offer some insight. When we decided to bid on hosting the 2011 meet, a great deal of dicussion went into how to find a venue which would provide the most "bang for the buck". Hence our choice of Oklahoma City which is not only more centrally located for most members(cuts down on travel time and gas), but also quite a bit less expensive than anything we could find in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The HET Meet committe searched long and bargained mightily to provide our members with a great, well facillitated hotel for far less than $100 a night; we even got them to throw in 2 free HOT breakfast buffets with each room!
Now, I know that $20 a night might be a real hardship on some of our members(by the way, the hotel rate we negotioated is only $85 a night). I can understand the need to pinch pennies. I think that we have done a pretty good job of "pre-pinching". We want this to be a meet not about the money, but about the people, about the cars, about the fellowship and camaraderie that is the HET Club. Well, let me get off my soapbox and just say that we are going to have a fantastic meet, that all are welcome and that all should come!

Sarah, I know how you feel. I was emailed a copy of the cover page and saw my car - the picture taken during our recent HET Safari to the 2010 AGM at Hanmer and I did not even submit the photo. It was just one of many on a disk sent to Sam. It really gave me a buzz and I am looking forward to getting my hard copy.
  • Got my WTN today up here in Canada. Nice to read as I look at my window at 4 feet of snow in my front yard. :S
