engine ID
Hi guys, just picked up a couple of Hudson engines about to be taken to the scrap yard.
One seems to be a 51 hornet engine I think. It has the H-145 on the head and a small aluminum plate attached that I can barely read-- has
CT Power Dome
Use Premium Fuel
3058J4 on the tag.
Then engine block # is 108399
The other engine has the 262 on head and block # is 200174.
???
Also was a Hudson flathead 8 block with aluminum head, no crank or oil pan.

What is the number on the cylinder head (six digits)?0

Thanks Hudson308 for the block casting date location and casting explanation. The engine I have has a 52 vin number and I suspected it to be a later block, because it was painted gold over red and the very light stamping of the vin number.
The casting number under the distributor is D55. There are only two numbers, so does that mean it is a April 5, 1955 engine block?
Thanks again. Lee O'Dell0 -

A '55 block should be easy to spot by the different dipstick location, Lee.
What is different about the dipstick location? Did I read the casting number incorrectly.0 -

Maybe they put it in an easily accessible location???0 -

If the date code is D55, I would read that as April 5, 1955 as well. The strange VIN stamp might indicate a warantee block cast in '55. All the AMC blocks I've seen have the dipstick located more forward on the block, but maybe they cast some versions that late with the stepdown locations as well. This would be important for you to know... the rear main seal and crank flange are different on the '55-56 AMC 308's. Compare what you have to the '49 262 shown below. Look especially at the dipstick and filler tube locations. Maybe someone else can post a shot of one of the newer blocks for comparison.
P.S.- Try not to razz me too bad for the 2x4 "gusset" augmenting the Harbor Freight engine stand. The good stand is busy holding up an old elephant.
The position of the dipstick and oil filler tube appear to be located in the same place as in the picture. Can you give me the difference between the cranks you mentioned and the measurement from the back of the block to the crank flange, and which one is which. I would like to know for sure what crank is in the engine.
Thanks for the information. Lee0 -
Hi!
I took two photos of the number on the engine: H34 31011 CWC 2

All blocks that start with a 3 in the numbers and have total 6 numbers cast into the block under the distributor are 51 to 54 only. 55 and 56 blocks start with a 5 and a total 7 numbers and don't let anyone tell you different. If a 55 or 56 engine had to be replaced under warranty, it has 2 location for the dip stick, at the back and you had to re-drill the hole for the stick just behind the distributor at the bottom to install in the 55 and 56 Nash bodies. If it has the 2 locations, you have a replacement engine. The dealer was supposed to stamp the block number of the engine they took out, but we used to put our own numbers on the block so we could sell or re-use the block as we were supposed to destroy the engine. Reviving this thread because of the pics that illustrate what I am requesting.
Back during the "cold" months I placed a request for input from the forum users for
Engine casting numbers and date codes. Hudson 308 has explained what and where these numbers are located. I especially need numbers from narrow block (1950) Pacemakers and
wide block Wasp,Super wasp engines.
From my research so far (Thanks to Dr. Doug and Glenn Kellogg)
these numbers were changed when a change in the casting was made. For example, 51-53
Hornets carry the same casting number. 54 Had several changes hence the number change.
1955-56 had number change reflecting the changes made for the AMC bodies.
It seems that one could quickly identify the engine by this method. I would like to request this info for the 1939-1947 years also. Please respond either on the forum or to my e-mail

Don't know if any one addressed the 2nd engine .... - The other engine has the 262 on head and block # is 200174. That's from a 1952 manufactured in August 1952 (199202 to 202916).
The info Hudson 308 came up with, ie, April 1953, is in the sequence for that time period.

MAYBE I MISSED IT BUT HAS ANY ONE ASKED ARE THE HEAD BOLTS 7/16 OR 1/2 THAT WILL TELL YOU IF IT'S A 55 FOR SURE0
-
Not necessarily Paul. There are three 308 engines somewhere out there that I put 1/2" studs into back in the 1970's. I never did another one, for sure. LOL Had a real fun time chewing up drill bits (special bits at - at that time -$75 a drill bit) and extracting broken taps. Being relatively new to Hudson at the time I didn't know about the chrome alloy in the blocks.
