Hudson Dana hub taper rust

Unknown
edited November -1 in HUDSON
I reassembling my Dana rear and the Hub and the shaft have rusty area near the center of the taper. I have sanded the rust off. How can I make sure the TAPER is good enough for a good grip/fit. Or is the load taken by the KEY?
Is there a way to "Lap" in or seat the hub taper to the shaft taper?
Thanks Dave

It's probably not a problem provided you got the area smooth. However, you can always lap it back in with a standard brake cylinder hone.
  • If this problem has you worried, why not just get 2 new axles. The hubs will be no problem when torqued to 150 foot pounds. Walt.
  • Dave - I don't know if this would work. I've never tried . But cauldn't you clean the axle and hub real good and put a thin layer of valve laping compound on the taper of the axle . then put the hub almost in place (with out the key) And lap it in , rotating the hub on the axle. Then clean off the laping compound and see what tho surface on the axle looks like. Just a thought . Norn
  • You can do that but you have to remember you only have about 10 to 15 thousands clearance from brake shoes to drums at the sides. Walt.

I wonder if Model A ford axel shims would help if the taper gets too worn?
