I introduce myself and ask for advice
Hello everyone! My name is Michele from Switzerland. I bought a 1950 Hudson Pacemaker 262, ... I ordered from Kanter, the new head gasket, but unfortunately it is very narrow and not good. it is possible that my car is fitted with a larger engine? Maybe built after 1951? Can anyone give me some advice?

Your car has the wide block 262 engine, 1951 up. The 1950 Pacemaker has the narrow block 232 engine. What is the serial number on the right front corner of the block, as this will tell me the year and car engine was in? Walt Mordenti0

Yep, that appears to be a 262 head. Serial number, if you drop the 7, is for 1954 and would have been among the last produced (3126251-319720.
If the 7 is what I think it is you may have a 262 head on a 308 (Model 7D) block. Entirely possible.

I would also order a "BEST" head gasket from either Dale Cooper or Randy Maas. They know Hudsons better than Kanter.
The BEST head gasket has superior sealing so will be better for your project.0 -

Check out the information on "engine ID" thread dated 26 Jan 2011. Right now it is on page 4 but as time passes it will be on a higher numbered page.
Thanks to Hudson308 posting engine ID by the block casting number under the distributor you can determine the month, day, and year the block was manufactured.
This helped me. My block casting number was dated in 1955 but it had a 1952 V/N stamped on the engine. It was apparently a replacement engine block.

Michele, thanks for contacting the Hudson forum. Look at the lower part of your engine block, on the left side. See if there is a second "lip" or ridge, running from front to rear, about 5cm above the bottom (oil pan) lip. This double lip is only on the Hornet engines, so that will tell you if it's a Hornet. And it's quite common for a Hornet engine to be equipped with a 262 head ... it increases the compression.
Do you live in the "Bonjour" area of Switzerland, or the "Gruezi" area? Are you acquainted with any of the other Hudson owners there? If not, I can put you in touch with a couple of them ... one has a '53 Hornet sedan, the other a '33 Terraplane. E-mail me at pwald@comporium.net.0 -

I come from the "Italian Switzerland ".... In Italy I know the owner of a Commodore 6, 1949 ... In Switzerland, I know that there is another (green 4-door ).... I do not understand what are the "lips" that you mean ....

Hello and welcome.
The RIDGE that Park refers to is shown in the attached picture. The 308 engine is the only engine of the 232, 262 and 308 Hudson flathead 6 engines with the reenforcement ridge.

You need to make sure of what engine you have before you order the head gasket. A 262 gasket on a 308 makes the engine sound like a diesel. The gasket must match the bore size. CG0

Regarding the '55 spare engines that were made to go into the '54 and earlier cars, here's how to identify one of these engines. The arrow points to the small raised "boss" just below and a little aft of the distributor. This is not present on the original '54 and earlier engines. If the '55 spare engine is set up to go in a '55-'56 car, this would be drilled out for a dipstick. For those engines intended for '54 and earlier cars, this boss is not drilled out; the boss at the rear is drilled out instead.0 -

Just look at the numbers casted into the block under the distributor. If it starts with 3 and has a total of 6 numbers, it's a 51 to 54 engine. If it starts with a 5 and has a total of 7 numbers, it'a a 55 or 56 engine. Walt.0
