Fuel Sending Unit - "Modern" Replacement

Found out why my fuel guage was not registering any fuel ...half of the sending unit is laying in the tank.:( Too many years of not having a full tank and it rusted.

I only found this out because the tank started leaking from a spot under one fo the strapes so i had to drop the tank to get the tank repaired.

So the part hunting question of the day is: What is the NAPA/AutoZone/Car Quest parts number for a replacement fuel level sending unit?

Let me rephrase the question...what is a "modern" exchange fuel level sending unit? Is the Ford part listed below the only one?

The auto parts places don't have these sending units. There are two choices ... you can have your original King-Seely unit rebuilt or replaced at a price of about $150, or you can get a replacement from Dennis Carpenter Ford Parts for about $30. The Carpenter piece is listed as for '55-'56 Fords I think, and maybe goes back to earlier ones as well. It's a resistor type sender, not quite like the original "make and break" sender, but it fits the tank properly and works reasonably well. You'll have to bend the float arm to mimic the general shape of the original, and it may take a little trial and error to get the bend right so it reads OK at the empty and full limits of travel when installed in the tank.

K-Gap does have the seal for where the filler pipe goes through the floor.

OK. So this Ford Part is available at my local Parts house or is Dennis Carpenter the Sole Seller and manufacturer?

Next Part Question....Is a replacement float available that will fit the 1950 sending unit? I just found after dumping the stuff out of the tank that it is the float that is missing, The arm is intact and good shape.

I pulled my sending unit out a couple months back. When I was researching replacement options, I found the following website: http://atwaterkentmfg.com/Fuel Senders.htm These replacements have cork floats, which might not be your first choice. I ended up not needing to replace mine. I found it was just a broken wire on it that I soldered back together. Replace gasket to avoid a fuel leak!

OK. I must be blind. I am not seeing that listed. I must be looking for the wrong item thinking I am look for Seal, Gas filler, Trunk.

If your sender looks anything like my '52's, the float listed should easily be made to work. And if nobody around here has a old float, and you can't find the Ford ones, I'm sure you can find a float at McMaster-Carr.

P500, you're not blind ... I've just got a poor memory. I think that filler pipe floor seal was offered by Full Line Reproductions a few years ago, not K-Gap. I don't think Full Line is in business now. Anyone know who might have bought their stock?

So far as sending units go, NAPA does offer a unit for a 1955 Ford. Part Number FG95A. List price is $109.00. Dennis Carpenter offers a unit for a 1955 Ford also. Part Number 99A-9275. Their price is $40.00. Dennis Carpenter also offers a brass float (Part Number 68-9275-F) for $10.00.

I called Jason at Albright's several weeks ago. He is selling the sender unit for about $70.00. And, he gets them from Dennis Carpenter.

FYI the sending unit form dennis carpenter will not be acurate. I have tried about three of them, spent hours trying to tune in the arm. You need to buy these from Paul Schuster (LARGEPAUL). As he says, the resistence for operation is different with hudson on the sender unit. I have now used two sender units form him, installed in minutes and are accurate. Cost is about $75. It is the same as dennis carpenter but the resistence has been modified to Hudson specs. Pay the extra $35 and save the hassle.

Just how much off are they? But at least I can see that I have gas with the Ford version.

I have a Carpenter unit on my Hudson and it works good enough for me to know to get gas when it's registering a little less than a fourth of a tank. I tried to order one for my Kaiser a while back and they refunded my payment because they were out of them. Has anyone bought a sender unit from Dennis Carpenter in the last six months?

If you have one of the non-Schuster(PAULARGETYPE) ones (hudson1957@aol.com), like I have, you need to adjust the arm so you know how much gas you DON'T have, not how much you DO have.

I have to re-adjust mine on the 49 because when it reads half, I'd better get gas.

I'd go with Schuster the next time, and the 40 is coming up. Hey, give the poor man a couple of extra bucks. He works hard to make sure we have the right stuff.

These are also available from C & G Ford Parts in Esconido, CA. Their catalog is online. They also have to bent to work correctly. I'm still screwing around with the one in my '36T!!!

Get Paul Schuster's and do it right. Won't have to mess with it later on. Paul has invested money out of his own pocket for these. I would not use the cork with this new gas. He also has them for 55-57 and Jets.He has all the replacement decals for your Hudson too!

Mea culpa, Jim ... I've just gotten a little sensitive to folks asking where they can get this or that ... stuff that 'most any member would or could know. Those non-members are giving up quite a bit for the sake of thirty bucks or so.
