Question removing cowel air vent
How do you remove the air vent mounted on the cowel? It is really stiff trying to open it from the cab and want to lubricate it. I can barely pry it open with my fingers. I have removed the 4 screws from the top of the heater, two on each side, but there seems to be something else holding it up. Do you have to remove the heater?
Thanks for your feedback,
Doug

You can not remove the heater box inside the car. Why they put those 4 screws there is a mystery. That box is welded to the firewall, only the bottom half and the heater core you can remove. Lube the rods that you open the cowl vent and the rod that goes through the box at each end from under the dash. Another way is remove the screen and lube the cross rod this way. Walt.0

Walt's right. Those bolts have puzzled me as well. Might have been put there to center the heater plenum box before it was welded(?) Anyway the heater is removed by unscrewing the phillips screws on the upper flange on the blower box. Remove the blower box and you can see the heater directly above it. make sure your plumbing is detached and the heater should come right out. As for the cowl vent, to gain acess to the vent, lube the interior pivot points with kroil or equavelent. Next, use a wide putty knife to spread the outter edge of the cowl vent upward. This is the side closest to the engine. Once the vent is up, there is a phillips head screw at the top of the cowl vent screen. Remove it by pulling it up and out of the vent recess after unscrewing the screw. Now you have the vent hardware with those funky clips holding it all together. Detach the clips and open the vent all the way open. Slide out vent bar from vent recess. Now unscrew the 4 phillips screws Pull out vent. My be a step or two I forgot but I think this is about it. Good luck with your project Doug.0
