What is the meaning for this casting # and the significance of the pointer on my 308 engine block?

    Does anyone have a clue about this casting?

    I believe that it was used to record how many times the mold or fixture was used to cast the block. After a predetermined amount of cycles, the fixture would have to be reworked. Also if casting flaws did appear. they would know which mold and which cycle it failed on.. Sound resonable? In short, A method of tracking Quality. . Just my WAG

    That make sense. That explains why I have seen the pointer on another engine pointiing toward a different number.
