What do I got here??
I picked up a 41 Traveller Sedan a while back and finally got motivated to pull this engine out so I can assess the rest of the car. I know I need to rebuild the firewall due to major rust.
Looking at the engine though, I am a little confused. The car is a 41, but the head says Terraplane. When did they stop badging the engines with the Terraplane name?
The trans, while not bolted down, did have the shifter linkage and OD wires connected, so I'm assuming the trans is correct. Why would somebody swap an older engine in, and does the 41 trans bolt to the 30's engine?

What you have is a 1940 motor and transmission with overdrive, fitted with a 1936 Terraplane cylinder head.0

To answer your last question. Yes, the overdrive trans will bolt up to the later 30's engine. I have one on my 39.

Your trans is a 40, and Geoff's probably right on the engine , but to make sure clean off the top of the block between the first two exhaust ports , the engine # is stamped there and the first two digits will tell what model car it came from.0
-
The number on the top of the block is 412I563 as I read it. It could be 4121553 also. According to the Butler book and Marconi's info, this is a 40 super six engine.
Do I have this correct?
Is there any benefit to having the 36 head on there? I assume it may have been a war-time repair, you know, "use what you have", but I'm open to other ideas.
I'm going to be putting a 262 from a 50 in this car, so i won't be using this engine. The block has been open for a looooooonnnnggggg time, so i'm pretty sure it's locked up and not worth saving.
However, I know OD transmissions are desireable especially when complete mechanically and electrically. What should I be checking for to see if the trans is salvagable?0 -
Would a 262 even fit in that car?0
-
Seen them with 308s before. Firewall is toast so it can be rebuilt to fit any engine.0

This car is a 1940 Super Series - the longer wheel base, and yes the 48-56 engine will fit that chassis with no modifications. However, the Radiator would have to be moved forward to the same position as the Hudson 8, but the '41 traveler or DeLuxe Six chassis is considerably shorter than the car in this picture.
