Major book/manual to brain disconnect and I can't seem to get past it.

Where is the low idel screw on my Carter Wa-1 749s carb?
What should the screw with the spring be set at? How many turns back from
"bottom" should it be?

The picture in the manual does not match my carb as it sits on the intake.
SOLVED!!!!! Clogged jet. I need to get another filter just before the carb. I only have one in-line just leaveing the tank.

  • Shameless bump to the top.......

because I need help in understanding where the set screw is and how to set the string-loaded screw (on the passenger side of the carb).

The idle mixture screw is the serrated edge one with the coil spring under the head, coming out of the carby at an angle, near the base. It needs to be somewhere in the area of 1 to 1-1/2 turns out from home position, but you will have to ascertain the actual position with then engine hot and idling, and set for the smoothest idling. Turning in makes mixture weaker, out makes it richer.
  • Geoff is correct, 1 to 1 1/2 turns out is a good starting place then adjust for best idle. Be careful when turning the screw in to the seat it is easy to mess up the taper on the screw. turn it in until it seats then back it out 1 to 1 1/2 turns as a starting point. then adjust for the smoothest idle with crisp response off idle. You may have to check timing also.

    Next question....

Once car has run for a few minutes the choke butterfly opens about 1/2 to 3/4 and car starts to die. I give it more fuel using the thottle linkage and it will stay running.

I have backed the mixture screw out through three full turn (starting at 1 1/2) in 1/4 turn increments but it still dies if I do not give fuel via the throttle linkage.

What next? The throttle set screw on the linkage is maxed to the fastest idle possible using the screw (as I understand it).

Have you checked the spark plugs to make sure that they are not fouled? If your carburetor mixture was off, you could have fouled the plugs which would cause it not to idle. Just a thought.

I will pull them and check later today.

Sounds like you may have a blocked main jet.

How would I check & fix this?

You also may want to make sure that the screen is clean. Take off the brass nut on top of the carb and carefully remove the gasket and screen. Clean it with some carb cleaner.

You might be able to clean the jet with carb cleaner too. If not, pull the carb and take off the top to get to the jet. Most times you can just blow through it to get the obstruction out or run a straight pin through it. I'm very poor with writing detailed instructions but I'm sure that somebody on here will give you much better instructions than mine on removing the carb and top.

One last suggestion. This new gasoline (or garbageoline, as I call it) will gum up in about 30 days if there is no stablizer added to it. There is also an ethanol moisture removal product now out too, although I haven't tried it. If you aren't driving the car enough to run a tank of gas through it in a month, be sure to use some brand of stablizer.
  • Gas should be fine as this is brand new gas, just pumped from station Saturday. New filter as well. But I will purchase stabilizer as I will not be driving that much when I do get it running.

What part do I remove to access the jet so i can try the straight pin method?

I got it figured out by taking bold step and carefully removing the low idle fuel mixture screw. Screw looked good, damage to end. I squirted carb cleaner into port and inserted soft wire just smaller than set screw.

I also checked filter scree on top and it did have a few bits on it. Cleaned it and reinstalled.

I got the car to idle nicely at 2 turns back from closed.

THANKS TO ALL WHO OFFERED ADVICE AND TIPS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR & LOOK AT. Notes were made in the procedure manual.
