rear main oil seal

I have the rear main bearing cap off of my 308 and would like to know which rear main seal I should replace the worn one with. I purchased a new neoprene seal from Dale Cooper that is a direct fit therefore I want to use this one because it is easier for one thing and should be better. I also have the old type seal that has to be formed to fit, anyone use the new neoprene seal and have success?
Thank You :)

  • To replace the packing type, you have to remove the trans and the flywheel. The upper half is held in by 3 bolts and don't know if you can slip the old packing out without damage to the crank seal surface. I just bought a neoprene seal from Dale and am going to install it into a 53 Super Wasp but will pull the trans and flywheel. Give Dale a ring and see what he says. Walt.
  • Thank you, and yes I am going to pull the transmission for the upper half. Dale said it is the real deal, so if Walt is going to use the new seal that is more than good enough for me. When I removed the bearing cap the old seal was stuck in the slot, so the to top seal will be impossible to remove without scoring the slot where it goes, maybe the new seal will be easier to remove and install. However the transmission, flywheel, etc need to be cleaned and easier when removed.

I just had mine replaced while they where doing my clutch. I bought the neoprene one. I don't know how hard it was for them but he didn't say anything bad about the seal. He said he would have to drop the oil pan in order to do it right. The seal was two pieces and it came with a piece of string.

You can replace without taking off the tranny. Just loosen up the 2,3rd mains. About a 2 hour job all together. Done it a few times
  • Walt here, how did you remove the upper half?
