Monroe Shocks

After researching the Monroe web site for shocks for our '54 Hornet, I only find the 31094's listed for the rear but nothing for the front. I understand that the 5751's are for the front but they didn't come up on the Monroe web site. Any thoughts? I'd like to take advantage of the "buy three and get one free" promotion they are now running. Thanks.

Finding the right front shocks for a stepdown is at best problematic. Several current brands meet either the compressed or extended lengths specified in the Mechanical Procedures Manuel; but as far as I’ve been able to determine, none meet both. In the light and heavy scale (duty) range Hudson specified Monroe and Delco shocks with compressed lengths of 7 3/4 to 7 25/32 inches and extended lengths of 12.00 to 12 1/16 inches, providing a range of movement of about 4 1/ 4 inches. Monroe has shocks which will meet either compressed extended lengths. Their shock no. 31176 has a compressed length of 7 1/8 inch, exceeds the 7 ¾ inch specified, but which falls short of the stated 12 inch extended length by about an inch and five-eighths. Likewise shock no. 5751 exceeds the expansion figure in the manual, but is ¾ of an inch short of the 7 ¾ inch compression figure at 8 1/2inches.
Whether the figures given by Hudson in the repair manual are what’s needed, or simply what was available at the time, I don’t know. I’m running the Monroe SensaTrac 5751’s at present, and have had no problems with them in about 2500 miles. On the other hand, I did have trouble with an earlier Tenneco shock of unknown spec’s. which pushed the stem through the mounting plate.
It would seem to me, that the compressed length would be more critical than the extended length, as it comes into play when the wheel is forced upward, against the resisting weight of the car. The wheel dropping into a hole, on the other hand, would it seem to have less effect. Perhaps one of our mechanical engineers can clarify.
Monroe shock spec’s for their products are available on line at:

There was considerable info exchanged in earlier forum posts.
