Question re water temperature
I finally got my 54 Special with the rebuilt 308 engine out for a short test drive. My concern is the water temperature. I let the engine warm up then took a spin around the block two times. The temperature indicator gauge was at a tad past the halfway mark. Is this typical for a new engine? When it is broken in where will the indicator normally rest?
The water pump and thermostat are new and the radiator was full.
Thanks for any feedback,
Doug

Sounds like things are about right, when engine is broken in it should run a little bit cooler. Between 160 and 190 should be fine, it depends on what temp your thermostat is.0

All Hudson temperature gages have no temperature indicator on the dial. Just marks on the dial. You would have to buy a temperature ray gun. A digital unit that can tell temperatures on any part of the block, raditor, etc. A tool that should be in everyone's tool box. Plus you can take it with you and check temperatures while on a trip. Good luck. Rich0

MY 54 Special runs just at or slightly above the center mark. I have a 180 degree t-stat.

Sounds about right. The way to get an accurate reading is to get one of the infrared guns and check temps with it. I just got a flyer from Harbor Freight last week and they've got one for around $30.00!0

THank you guys. Thought I might have a cooling problem but apparently it is in the norm.
Thanks again,
