Welcome aboard, and I'm sure you'll receive some good advice here. In the meantime, let me put in a shameless plug for the H-E-T Club. Are you a member yet? If not, you may want to join because it serves as a great clearinghouse of information as well as a portal to a large network of Hudson, Essex and Terraplane owners. I'd guess that 75 - 85 percent of the people in this Forum are members. The Club's website is at http://www.hetclub.org/ .

    If you're already a member.....never mind!

    Welcome aboard.

You can't tell a 308 by serial numbers (engines just carried the same serial no. as the car itself, no way to differentiate). But 308 has a unique feature. It has a strengthening rib cast into the block, about an inch above the oil pan flange, running the length of the engine. None of the others have it.

Welcome! About the 308, I usually look for the rib too. Just like "Mike (WA)" said.
    Can we see the car?
    Do you have any pictures?:)
  • thank you guys very much for the help, ill probably have a lot of questions in the near future as this is the oldest project i have done. ill upload some pics in a new thread, the essex doesnt have the original engine or radiator in it anymore, from the research i have done they are out of a late 20's pontiac. i wasnt to worried about that as it is a hot rod project but in all my projects a believe in staying with engines from the manufacturer of the car this is why i am really leaning towards the hornet twin h 308. thanks again

You're gonna need a good shoehorn. The big six block is 34 inches long from rear mounting plate to front of harmonic balance pulley. Another 2 inches to the front of the fan if you use one.

The 212 splasher is 30.5 in. overall plus 2 for fan
The 254 eight is 36 in. overall plus 2 for fan
