Cleaning Essex Engine Block with Molasses

My engine block was badly blocked with rusty bits and therefore overheated when idling. I have cleaned most of the bits out however as hard as I try a small magnet will still find more bits at the front and rear of the block around the pistons.

It has been suggested to me that I should run the car for a month with a jar of molasses in the cooling water with a stocking filter over the top radiator hose to stop bits getting into the radiator. Having used molasses to clean parts I can see the benefit of this.

? Will the molasses attack the brass radiator or head gasket (copper) or anything else? Has anyone tried this method to clean a block?
