1928 Essex Bolts Torque Tensions

I see in previous postings that 40 lbs ft or foot pounds is used for the head.

I have gone through all my manuals and instructions books for the Essex and the figures do not appear to be given.

Is there a list of other torque values for the 1928 Essex eg crankshaft bolts?

Specific torques were not specified until post-war models as far as I know. However, you can, as a rule of thumb, use the figures given in the Jet or Step-down manuals which give the bolts sizes. You do have to be careful though, as the materials used in those early years were not necessarily the same tensile strength as later versions. the main thing is that you do not use a huge great bar on your socket and break the bolts or studs off. use a short ring spanner, or short handles socket handle, and don't go mad about it. Most modern engineers use hardened steel washers and specific torque settings, but on our old cars good spring steel washers and moderate tightness does the trick.

I am posting this chart as a general reference, I would treat the Essex bolts like grade 5, unless they are known to be hardened like grade 8.
Look to see if they have markings on the heads, I would be interested to know.
