Why you guys trying to start this trouble for anyway?
Because it's fun or something???? wink.gifblush.gifcool.gif
  • who let you in here? confused.gif <ul type="square"> i'll tell you why they're better; [*]handling, guess who won the majority of stock car races from 1951 to 1954 [*]lower, you can lower a hudson without a chop and it will be lower than a chopped and lowered merc [*]hydra-matic was available starting in '51,it's the best automatic of the era bar none, plus it makes Olds/Cad swaps easy [*]wider, the front seat in a hudson is "64 wide, perfect for sacking out in the wally world parking lot at Paso [/list] i personally love how they look, but to each his own.see ya round doc-george grin.gif
  • i forgot to add one very important thing,on average a running, driveable stepdown Hudson will cost about half what you'd pay for a Merc with no interior,no glass, and no drivetrain.
  • Maybe someone here can help me out then ??? Im trying to find preferably a '52 Hudson Pacemaker or anothew hudson with similar looks ??? I am having some trouble trying to locate something decent.
If anyone has any ideas or has one for sale, you can email me on killbjorn@hotmail.com (just have Hudson in the subject)
    Thanks

  • Bjorn, are you looking in the right places? Hemmings Motor News is an excellent source of antique cars for sale, as are Cars And Parts and Old Cars Weekly. If you're not already a member of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, you'll find that their bi-monthly magazine has a nice selection of Hudsons in its classified section. And you can check Ebay, as well as the Hudson Forum on the internet as well (go to the main site at http://www.hudsonclub.org/ and follow the Forum link).
  • ok. lets not fight. they are both cool. Old man hudson was way ahead of his time. Hell my 53 super wasp looks like a merc. Its not the make you drive.... as long as its real steel. If you wanna start shit with someone, start it with the yuppies who think building a fiberglass kit car is considered old school. Nothing burns me faster than havin some yuppie pull up next to me in a kit car and think his plastic is just as good, or better than my original. anyone can but a model together. It takes a real car builder to pull a car from out of a field and turn it into a masterpiece. REAL STEEL!

Just too many reasons to count. But NASCAR is a biggie and it is not a coincidence that all cars are modeled after the Hudsons step down and mono built body. And the first car with emergency backup bracking system, and if you want to push the ugly part, in a back to the fifties weekend with over 15,000 car there under 1964, 50 Mercury got mistaked for Hudsons too many times for the Mercury guys to take. There, I said it, Hudsons are better than Mercury. Although, I loved the '53 Merc with the flathead V8 and especially the glass dome ones with the green glass roof. Where can I see pics of that beauty?? Also the Merc has it hands down on the exhaust sounds. Mellowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
  • gentlemen, gentlemen who cares?they are both bitchen wether stock or customized, the point is to have some real americam steel and style too.too many cars now days all look the same,no style, boring,no personality at all.new cars distinguish themselves by letting you pick the wheels and shifter knobs, wow.be proud of what you got man,and if you're cruising down the street and some scion pulls up alongside you i'd be willing to bet they're jealous.

You're right on georgieboy! Personally I'm not into originals, so you can make any car cool these days. I saw an Ambassador station wagon in a recent mag that looked great! Custom and cool. I own a Hud coupe, but eventually will probably go with a 55 Olds grill or Desoto because they are just way cooler than the Hudson grill on my 50 Pacemaker but to each his own! lol And I'm going to be real happy with my LT1 and Mustang II set-up, better for me than the original set-up.

So just be happy with what you have (or want) and lets stop these kinds of threads that seem only to deride or get folks angry, thats not what the car sport is about. NOBODY'S CAR IS BETTER THAN SOMEONE'S ELSE.

FYI: Here in Wake County North Carolina - there is about a '53 Merc for sale for a few thousand - looks close to being able to drive .... I stopped to check it out when I thought I was gonna sell my b].

If interested in that project car - I can put ya' in touch with the ol' boy!
  • Hard choice.

Hudsons own on the Mercs with their racing success, and have a certain cachet all their own. Styling is a draw for me between the two, both are exceptionally sleek-looking cars to my eye, and among the best-looking not only of the period, but of all-time, again in my opinion. Enginewise, I love the Flattie V8's under the Merc's hood, but I like the Hudson 6 (especially when it's a Twin H!) - it's just something a little different from the V8 thing. I plan on using a 7X'd Twin H mill in my hot rod when I finally start building it.

Mercs, however, are just much easier cars to live with. Parts are easier to come by, as is tech advice, since a lot of folks have worked on these cars. Not only that, there are many more customizing techniques that are tried and true on the Merc, if you're into that sort of thing. Plus, just about everybody knows the '49 Merc; mention the name and you inspire awe even just in folks who saw (the new) Gone in 60 or Rebel Without a Cause. That's just not so with the Hudson, where the name is scarecely if ever known outside the classic car guys' circle.

This week, I'm in a Hudson mood, so I'll give it the win, but on any given day, that may change...it's gone back and forth for me for years  both are beautiful cars that I'd be ecstatic and proud to own and drive.
  • The Hudson is better than Mercury or Chevrolet or better than Ford is doesn't really matter. Each car camp has it's own cheer leaders and think there the best. The fact is no matter what the pedigree of each car is they're both great American cars and both should command your respect, after all there both American and that's what counts. I've seen both cars restored or in custom form and think they're very cool, I would be proud to own either one. Long live the Mercury and Hudsons........................And this opinion is coming from a '49 Cadillac Sedanette guy and I don't think my ride is any better than Hudson's of Ford's. After all guys may daddy can beat up your daddy, I'm talking my ball and going home. :p Be cool....
