FUEL TANK

Where does the fuel pick up line enter the gas tank on a step down?

Is it located on the top of the gas tank or is it located underneath where you don't have to remove tank to access it?

Is this part of the fuel gauge unit or is it a seperate unit?

If someone had a picture of it's location that would be VERY helpfull.

thanks

It enters to the left of the sender at the front of the tank, on the other side of the tanks center baffle. Can be removed without dropping the tank (disconnect fuel line, then two small screws), on my 52 at least.

Since we are on the topic of fuel tanks and pick up tubes, I'll ask this question. What do you guys use for sealant on the pick up tube gasket and screws. I replaced my gasket when I sealed my tank a few years ago and it leaks around the gasket when I fill the tank all the way. Not sure if it is coming from around the screws or the gasket. What sealant is compatable with gas?

Go to Ace hardware and buy a tube of Gas/Oil sealant. It is in a mustard colored tube with red & black printing. Cost is a couple of bucks. Will set in ten minutes.
  • While you are resealing your pick up tube look close at the solder joint. The one where the tube passes thru the flange. They have a tendency to get a hairline crack in them,

I used some gas resistant rubber sheet (can't remember the exact stuff, ~3/16-1/8" thick) from McMaster-Carr and cut gaskets for both pickup and sender.
