Indicator light
Just for the fun of it, I'm thinking about attaching an indicator light to the overdrive that lights up when the overdrive engages. Has anyone done this before? Any ideas on which wire to hook it to using a modern relay and kickdown switch?
Thanks,
Jason

Packard had this feature in the 40s. I think they had another set of points in the relay to do this. If you can get your hands on a wiring diagram for the 40 Packard O.D. you'll see how they did it.0

Right you are Marconi. Packard did use a separate set of points in the relay to light the indicator. See wiring diagram below.

You shouldn't need an extra relay, just run an extra wire from the solenoid to your light.0

Hhhmm, I see if I can put my hands on the previous owners diagram for my 49 Hornadore. It has a red jeweled indicator under the dash that lights up when the
OD circuit has power. Then as soon as you exceed the governor speed the red light
goes out and the matching green light next to it comes on. Time to easy off the
gas and engage OD. He did used modern relays but still uses 6V.It is a neat little
indicator.0 -
A 6 volt bulb wired between the ign switch, accy terminal and the governor should do what you want it to as the governor grounds when the cut in speed is reached.0

I've had the car converted to 12 volts, so I was thinking about getting a green indicator light from O'Reilly's and wiring it in a fashion similar to what Geoff recommended. Since the indicator lights I'm seeing on the internet have only two wires, can you give any guidance as to how to how to hook it the acc., ign. and governor?

If the lamp is what i think it is.. a plastic lamp with two wires.. Connect either one to the acc. side of the switch or the ignition side. Connect the other one to the wire that connects to the governor. Power will be applied to the lamp with the ignition on and ground will be applied when the governor kicks in. Depending on how your system is wired, you may be able to trace the ground wire that connects the relay to the governor. It may be more accessable on the firewall than crawling under the car...:cheer:0
