Stupid question time!!

Where do I go to look up old posts on particular subjects? I want to rebuild the steering box on my 52 Hornet. :blush: I have been looking and looking on the sight and can not see where to enter subjects in regard to older posts. I keep telling myself the only stupid question is the one that is not asked.:huh: Thanks. Bill

    It's the box that says "search" on the right just under the advertising at the top of the page. You have to be logged in to see it. Once it opens you have to set the search parameters. It doesnt seem as user friendly as the last version of the forum but may just be me.

    What's the problem with it? Too much play? Are the bearings shot? Worm and/or gear sector worn?

    An old Coast Guard Chief once told me there was no such thing as a stupid question. There were, however, stupid answers.

    Just looked in the 1948-1954 Master parts catalog and it appears, from that, the same steering gear box was used from 1948-1954. That said................

    There is, in the online library, a 1950 Service Manual. You should be able to get your info there.

    You can find the manual @ http://hetclub.org/burr/manuals/1948Manuals.html - The 1950 manual is 3rd from the bottom.

  • You are right about the years the steering box was used. However I seem to recal the short wheelbase cars were different ratio?

    I think you are right, Roger. Looked up the assembly in the parts book. The shop manual lists 20.4 to 1 for Model 500; 18.2 to 1 for the rest.

    Looked at the 1950 shop manual - that doesn't shed any light either so would assume from that the repair procedures are the same for both ratios. Just some parts would be different.

  • I have the engine and tranny out and the gear box is leaking fluid. I haven't driven the car for over 20 years so not sure what kind of shape it is in. I thought with easy access to it now I could check it out. I believe the whole steering column needs to be taken out to remove the gear box from the frame. Is this correct? Maybe I don't need to do all this? Looking for help so that is why I was looking for old posts. The old way to search was pretty easy Thanks in advance. Bill

    The column tube can be disconnected at the steering box and withdrawn inside the car, the steering shaft will remain attached to the steering box. Once the column tube is out you will have the box on the bench fairly quickly.

    And there really isn't a whole lot to do. Hudson did a marvelous job of engineering these boxes. Too much play is easily remedied with a shim or two, and it will tighten the drive gear right back up like it was when new.

    MOST LIKELY, if you have excess play in your steering, you will find it further on down the line, as in the front end. Your steering box is really one of the last components to develop problems, as they were over engineered to begin with.

    Best source is the Mechanical Manual, which gives you blown-up pictures and proper procedures for adjusting your box. If you disconnect the pitman arm and don't see a lot of play between the main shaft and the arm shaft, problem probably lies elsewhere. Simply draining the fluid and replacing with fresh 90w might be all that is needed.
