My recollection of a discussion on the subject before was that you could adapt the 2 lever transmission (which yours should be) to a floor shifter, but there were special problems if it has overdrive. Something to do with getting it out of overdrive when shifting into reverse, but I don't understand all I know about it.

Might try a search on this site- I hope you have better luck with searches than I do.

Here is the topic on putting a floor shift using a Jeep shifter.

The problem with a floor shift with a car with overdrive (OD) is that if you operate the car in reverse while in overdrive you will destroy the OD. On stock setup they get around this by having the OD shift rail extend in to the trans where a shift into reverse will push the OD out of overdrive. The problem is that this mechanism is in the side shifter which is removed when using the Jeep shifter.

Simple solution, pull the O/dr.cable out before backing up. It is then locked out and will not engage. The switch on the back of the trans can be by-passed,just make sure that the cable portion works well and then pull it out-[locks out overdrive when pulled out]- will resolve any issue with overdrive engagement. Single lever transmissions with overdrive sometimes "wants to fall out of reverse"-simply pull the cable out-locks it out-will usually fixes the falls out of reverse problem. The spring in the overdrive case has more tension at this point in time-[AGE/wear]_than the detent springs on the shift rails. Yes,it can be corrected by completely disassembling the trans and replacing these springs. Hope this helps. CG
  • I don't have overdrive on my trans,so i guess i need a J double e p shifter? also my search prowess leaves alot to be desired, i always end up with one result and not much related to my search terms. Thanks J.R.
