Stepdown gas tank replacement
The gas tank in my '54 Hornet is no good. Having problems with leaking (rust) and pickup. Are there any good substitutions that I can attach my filler tube to? Or, is there a source for good stepdown gas tanks? I know that the '54 tank is unique. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know if he's still doing it, but Glen Johnson in Brigham City, Utah used to rehab and sell gas tanks. gmc46golden at aol dot com, (435)723-31430

Used 54 tanks are certainly available ( I have a couple spares), but most would need to be cleaned out and sealed. The last time I had one done, it was about $250.

I checked with Glen for tank repair and for future reference he is no longer servicing gas tanks. The first person I approached to repair mine threw his hands up "no way am I touching that".0

I will take a look at the ones I have and get back with results.0

If it helps any ,the only differance is the fill tube. Last time this came up I sold the person a regular stepdown tank and they cut off the fill tube and spliced the old 54 one on with fuel resitant rubber hose.

If Don can't end up helping, Joe Stinnett in FL is selling re-serviced tanks done with Re-Nu.0

Ive had good luck with several tanks with the 'ReNew Gas Tank Process' available in most larger cities at select radiator Shops.0

I will look at the tanks I have tomorrow (my day off)and report back condition. They are still on the cars in my back yard.

There's a renu outfit in Albany, about 50 miles away and they said they could fix it. I will also wait and see what you have Don.ski4life65 wrote:I will look at the tanks I have tomorrow (my day off)and report back condition. They are still on the cars in my back yard.

I jacked both 54's up to look at the tanks. Turns out one of them has a tank from earlier stepdown. I guess I could have saved a little time by opening the gas door first :S . The other one looks solid but has a 6 inch dent on the bottom. It has a nice ping to it when tapped, so maybe there isn't alot of crap in the bottom. If the renew outfit near you won't fix what you have, I can take this one to my local place (Spike's) and see what they say. He has worked miricles for me in the past and not charged me very much.0

Thanks. I will look into getting mine done and if it is "toast" then I'll look into your tank.0
