Water jacket cover

Hi

Found out today that the water jacket cover (initially thought it was a valve chamber cover plate) on my 40 is rusted through. Does anyone have such a plate?

(I hope I have the correct part name here - but see attached photo - the plate on the block)

Thanks
Dewald

Back in the day when Art Adams was editor of the WTN he put a center fold in each WTN in the form of technical bulletins.

These have been put online - there is one there that shows you how to make a new baffle plate. if you need that piece. Go to:

http://hetclub.org/burr/other/lit-other.html and click on Hudson Technical Bulletins, Vol. 1 - the one you want is TS 84-2. Sorry about the quality of the reprint, the original wasn't all that great but it is useable.

On the other hand, the cover itself is a different matter.

If all else fails, try Jason @ Vintage Coach, 8to 5 Tues to Sat. 909-823-9168. He has NOS ones in stock for the 6 cyl engine.

    Hi there

    Update on the cover plate.

After taking the plate off, I noticed the real rust damage. The baffle is completely rusted through. As can be seen from the to photos, there is a rust crack almost right around.

Also, here is a photo of the rust on the inside before I started cleaning it away.

Thanks Alex for the bulletin - I will defenitely use it to build a new baffle plate.

you might save yourself a lot of time by just buying an NOS one; if not Jason also try Al Saffrahn who I'm sure has good used ones as well as NOS

I'd also suggest that after you've got your repairs done & cooling systems flushed & cleaned out that you add water soluable oil to your new clean water - it will prevent future rusting & is avail. in auto parts stores.
  • At the national in OKC I bought a new stainless steel replacement from Charlie Harris for my 254 8cyl. I believe he had them for the six's also,

From your photos it appears that the baffle is completely missing. There should be a plate on the inside with three round holes in it. Any or all of the suggestions above should result in your obtaining a good water jacket. ;)
  • True, the baffle plate has completely rusted away.
