Painting Rims

I am in the process of getting my rims ready to paint and noticed that they did not appear to have been painted on the inside where the tire sits. Is it not supposed to be painted? Also the 1946 radio has plastic type chrome plating around the inside of the center piece but it is not in good condition and will not look good among all the new chrome plating on everything else. Is there somewhere that this can still be done? Thanks for any info,

Jeff

Check with several chrome platers. Some of them do plastic plating.

Jeff, I had my rims powder coated and very pleased. Something you my consider. Chip resistant, and look great. Just my two cents worth.

    Jeff,
I too am a big fan of powder coating rims. They simply hold up better on the open road.

In answer to your question about plastic chrome. There are several shops that specialize in this process. Check with Old Cars Weekly or Hemmings Motor News to find a supplier near you.

Jeff, I have done both on wheels. No question as the guys said regarding powder coating and when the tires are mounted it will withstand the breaker bar better. But... It cost me $50 per wheel and that was at a discount by a friend. And colors can be limited. Example, no mix for seal gray (1953) and on my car the inside is chassis black and the outside of the rim is body color. A black paint bomb = $5
  • I had mine blasted and powder coated. They covered the rims 100%. We were even able to find a color that was real close to the original. Cost was about the same as painting.

The folks that do my powder coat can take any paint mixture that I bring to them and put it on the wheels. Ask what your supplier can do for you.....
  • Thanks for all the input. I did not even think about powder coating the rims.
