Voltage regulator cross referance

I know we talked about this before. On the late 53 and 54 GGW generator what is the Echlin matching regulator( 45amp )? In my swaps I have Ech VR -27. I wrote in also VR-22. What does the VR-22 go to if not Hudson. If someone has a cross reference, I would really like to know. I have listed the VBE-6104A for the obsolete Autolite and Standard VR-4. I have a Echlin VR-22 listed and I don't know why. Napa sells Echlin brand( Genuine Parts Inc) but, they supply both, alas, without a clue of what they match on line. Thanks, Ron

  • Ron, The VR22 is a 6 volt 42-46 amp NEGATIVE ground voltage regulator. Not for a positive ground origional Hudson system. The VR25 is a 6 volt 37-41 amp voltage regulator POSITIVE ground voltage regulator. The VR27 is a 42-47 amp POSITIVE ground voltage regulator. You really have two positive ground regulators depending on how much amperage you want. For your year the VR 27 might be the best choice from the auto parts stores. Hope this helps you out.

Lance, Do you have a cross referance to what the vr-22 goes to? The reg says 6vN/P on the side. I have been running it on the Hornet for years. Outside of the Gen light comes on at idle(cutout) but goes out at 10mph or so, I have not any problems. Maybe I will just put back the Standard VR-4.

What you have is a "generic" regulator, for use on either system. You can carry on using it. The main difference is in the points material. The original regulators had different material in the voltage coil points, to enhance the life. You may have to occasionally clean the points with a doubled-over piece of 600 grit sandpaper, but otherwise you should have no problems.

Ah! Thanks a million. That would explain why I have it. Chrysler and Willys also used the 45 amp GGW generator, so I guess I picked it up some time ago. I just bought a Standard VR-4 from Rock Auto and I guess I'll sell this Echlin Vr-22 if anyone is interested. It worked well in my Hornet for about 5 years or so. If interested send a PM.Ron
