Essex carb help needed

Hi,
I have a friend in Italy who has a 1929 Essex Super Six Sedan. I am trying to help him find a part he needs for this car, an Air Valve Spring for a Marvel V 10-140 carburetor.

I don't know anything about these cars.

I have an inquiry out with The Carburetor shop hoping they might have something.

Any help with parts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

    I did a little on-line research.

This appears to be the manual for the '29 Essex carburetor: http://hetclub.org/burr/manuals/1929_essex_marvel_61_carburetor.pdf ("Thank you, Alex Burr!")

It appears to identify the air valve spring as Marvel part number 24-115.

It appears that this spring is unusually-shaped, and is shared by Marvel carburetors for other makes of automobiles, notably the 1924 and 1929 Buick:

I discovered a discussion on Buick "Marvel" carbs in an AACA forum, and a fellow from The Carburetor Shop LLC (of Missouri) appeared to indicate that he manufactures a number of Marvel springs, possibly including this one. I assume that this is the "Carburetor Shop" of which you speak. Their phone number is 573-392-7378.

I'm being very careful here. I am no expert on 1929 Essex carbs, so everything I've stated should be checked out. There might have been more than one carb for '29 Essexes, or maybe there was a "late '29" and an "early '29" -- or maybe your friend has a Marvel from a different year or make. Or one that's cobbled together from several parts. So be careful!
  • Hi Jon B
Thank you for the help. That is exactly the spring I need. My friend had sent me that part number 24-115 but I didn't know where he got that number and I was afraid it might confuse things. Unfortunately there have been some family matters that have prevented the Carburetor Shop LLC from doing business at this time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will come up with the spring eventually.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help.

I'll shoot an e-mail to my neighbor down the road, who has a couple 1920's Buicks. Evidently Buick used the same spring and maybe he has some sources. We'll see.

You should get a copy of Hudson club's magazine the "White Triangle News" for May/June 2011 and July/August 2011. In these issues Geoff Clark's Technical Topics column talks about Marvel carburetors and in particular he discusses making the spring in question in the May/June issue.

Here is the information I got from my "Buick friend" when I asked him about obtaining the special spring (which is shared by Marvel carburetors used in certain 1920's Buicks):

The Antique Automobile Club of America has a website with various forums (in the same way that this website has various forums).

http://forums.aaca.org/f119/ is the "buy - sell" forum (for all marques), and if you join the website (at no expense) you may place an ad there requesting the part. Here is the "buy-sell" forum for Buicks: http://forums.aaca.org/f117/ . This is the "pre-war" Buick Forum: http://forums.aaca.org/f165/

Also I have seen them on Ebay from time to time. Usually you have to buy the entire carb, but then you have spare parts. An example is http://www.ebay.com/itm/1924-BUICK-BRASS-CARBURETOR-/230688711404?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item35b61e62ec

This is the site where most of us get our 20s parts from. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carbshop_parts.htm

A best bet might be http://www.bobsautomobilia.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=45 but you might have to buy an entire kit if he has it.

    I wish you luck!

One of my neighbors (who's an old car nut like me) just e-mailed a Marvel chart showing the applications of spring number 24-115 from the early 1920's through about 1932. It tells what makes and models of various cars, used the spring you seek.

Possibly, if you knew some other brands that used the spring, it would be easier to obtain one.

I'd be happy to e-mail the list to you if you could provide an e-mail address. Mine is: detailed (at)verizon.net
