This is a long shot but does anyone have a 6 volt alternator, in good shape, that they would like to sell. Need one for my 54 308.

Thanks,
Doug

  • I assume you meant alternator versus generator that was stock on the car.
Here is one source to get a new 6V 60Amp alternator.

I'll check with my alternator-stater- generator guy today, but I think any repair shop that does alternators can make a 6volt one up a lot cheaper than 210.00.
  • The fifth avenue site, I believe also has a 6 volt conversion for do it yourselfers. Not hard to do and they give pretty good instructions.

  • Also Quick Start High Output sells a conversion kit, to change your alternator to 6 volt POS or NEG ground for around 40 bucks. Just google 6 volt alternators and it will give you several choices.

I got a GM 6 volt alternator, single wire $110.00 after fooling with a generator for about three years.
Got new cables, corroded from wet cell battery, and then got a 6 volt Optima.
What a difference in starting. Don't need to charge battery, even after letting sit for a week or so. Forgot and left the parking lights on for about a half hour one morning while at breakfast. Turned the key, and started right up. Next car will have the same setup.

I have been buying used 12 volt alternators and installing the 6 volt kits when needed. You can replace the bearings install the kit and have a reliable 6volt alternator for a very reasonable cost. Hudson Grandpa has the right idea... couple the alternator with a mat cell technology battery for reliability and good service.

Well my '36 Terraplane started right up after sitting for 17 months totally untouched with a good old-school 6v battery and a generator. I did not re-charge the battery. All I did was get in, turn the key and press the starter button. That included enough cranking to fill the fuel bowl too, and the motor is fairly high compression and no easy task to bump over.

    I bought a one wire 6V alternator from Howard Enterprises, 620-228-1477, 415 S. State St Iola, Ks 66749. E-Mail howent@hotmail.com

Howard was very helpful and willing to answer any question I had. He has several amp rated 6 volt alternators available to choose from. I would buy from him again.

I got feed up with constant generator/regulator problems for 2 years. Now with a alternator my dash gages are brighter and easily readable at night. Head lights are much brighter and visibility distance was increased considerably. Makes night driving visibility far superior to generator power. Ended my charging problems and it's safer driving on a dark street now.

The price between rebuilt generator and new alternator was a no brainer for me. The cost of staying original was getting out of hand.

For anyone not dead set on originality and wanting better lighting, get a price on a rebuilt generator and give Howard a call to compare price. Howards alternator will be the hands down winner in price and illumination performance.

  • There comes a point where dead set on originality doesn't become cost effective. As Lee states I was having all the same problems. When I discovered that a Gen doesn't charge the bat until you get to 25-30mph, and an alt charges the minute the engine runs, it became a no brainer. I had the volt reg and gen aligned at the alt shop, in the beginning. Still when I would come out after being parked for an hour, not enough fire to start the engine, and thus a 12 volt jump start. ANd i got disgusted with wet cells corroding the terminals. Thus the 6 volt Optima. 800 ccc. I also had the starter juiced up stronger. Theres just too much help nowadays to make things easier to run and old car. i am also electronic ignition. The rest of the car is as is.. An Albright 54 cpe.

    Happy Hudsoning....

My cronies at the Starter n Alt shop usually order a 6 or 8 volt internal regulator to fit a buy anywhere GM 10SI Alt n have less than rebuilding an old generator? also rid yourself of a voltage reg. Lots of circuit diagrams out there Mr Waldrop has a good one.I also always go 12 volt as a used 12 battery is better than a new 6 the old wires respom
and better as more "push" from the 12 also

I have had my 51 Pacemaker for 25 years now, still 6 volt. No problems starting even after idle for a period of time. Only trouble with the charging system is I had to put new brushes in the generator 3 years back (sticking mainly).

Question, if you use a 6 volt alternator and you have overdrive do you just rewire the feed wire from the armature side of regulator to O/D relay to the ignition switch? I'm assuming so as other cars are wired that way. When I had the no charge condition the O/D didn't work. Luckily I wapped the generator a couple of times and it started charging again and overdrive worked. Made it home 60 miles away.
