voltage regulator from Rock Auto

I just purchased a regulator for the 53-54 GGW generator from Rock Auto. The part is Standard Motor Parts( SMP) VR-4 as required. It came in a box from SMP labeled VR-4, however no where on the regulator is labeled VR-4. Instead, there is a printed 2177 6V N/P. I know that 6V N/P means six volt negative OR positive ground, But what is 2177? And if it did not say in the instruction sheet it is for a Chrysler or Willys( which also use the GGW, albeit with a wider air gap on the cutout), how would any one know what it went to or what the maximum amp(45amp) is ? Has any one purchased and installed one of these on their Hudson. Also, these look alot like the Echlin VR-22. Are these all made by the same manufacturer ?

I would say that the SMP VR-4 and Echlin VR-22 are made by the same manufacter because the same photos are used to show the regulator on the SMP and NAPA websites. As to whether it will work, you will have to trust SMP. VR4 is listed as the right regulator for a Hudson with a GGW generator.

"Trust but verify". I called SMP and asked what the 2177 number refered to. They kindly advised me that it is an internal number refering to a VR-4. So with out the box there is no way a hobbyist can be sure the reg is correct since there is no brand to refer to either. I agree Mars, Echlin and SMP use the same manufacture and sell the same product in a different box. Moral: KEEP THE BOX
