choke

What can I do to trouble shoot a choke that fails to open as the car heats up?

The butterfly moves freely when pushed by hand and the heat tube is connected to both the manifold and the carb.

This is on a 1954 Wasp 262 engine.

THANKS,

TOM

Is the vacuum passage that draws the air through the heat tube and acts on the choke piston clear? To check the coil, you can heat the choke cap on the bench with a hairdryer and see if the coil has enough movement to allow the choke to open.

Pull the cover and check the gasket. They sonetimes shrink and leak
vacuum. Also check the spring to see if it's broken or the cover is not
broken where it attaches in the center.
The spring can also be installed backwards , causing it
to get tighter instead of looser when it heats up.
Heat tube in manifold could be pluged.
But most likely just a tired spring.

Previously you posted that you were installing a rebuilt carb. I am assuming that the carb rebuild was done according to the manufacturers specifications. So,use the following link to download a manual and follow the information to check your carb and to assure the choke is set to specifications.
