gas tank seal
This past fall, I filled the tank in my 1950 Pacemaker to the top. It started leaking so took it to the garage for a check and they said that where the gas line comes out of the tank near or at the top, the seal was leaking. They drained a bit of gas out and it stopped leaking. Is there a replacement seal available anywhere?
I want to get that fixed before going to Gettysburg.

all that's there is a gasket for the sender unit and one for the pickup tube, and a short piece of hse that connects the filler tube to the tank, also a piece of tubing for the vent. I'd bet that it's the vent tube or the hose on the filler neck. The bad news is that you have to drop the tank to get to them.0

My 49 did that a few years back. Ended up being were the fuel line goes through the bracket the solder was cracked. Removed the fuel pickup,cleaned it up and flowed more solder/flux into the joint. Worked great and I didn't have to drop the tank.Reused what looked to be a homemade rubber gasket between the pickup and tank.I did drive it with less than a 1/2 tank for a month or two first though...0

If you need to replace the gaskets, you'll have to make them yourself. Not hard to do just get some gasket material and cut them out, use a SHARP knife or scissors though.0

Very true - I have found a couple of those fittings crackesd and leaking. And yes it is a simple matter to solder it back,

Steve, This is some thing that has always bothered me. Hudson lists the rubber line that is soldered in to the gas filler pipe as a vent pipe. However, I always thought of it as an overflow, because how is it providing a vent when it is sealed at the top of the tank and clamped to a nipple 4 inches below the gas cap. So, the real vent should be the cap itself,no? And you are correct that that the top rear left side where the tube it attached to the tank is a likely spot for fuel to leak when the tank is over full. That is a pest on my 53. Someday I'll drop the tank.0

Hudson called it a vent because it is . The fuel enters the tank about half way up on one side .Once the tank is half full of gas it will start to back up fill tube with no vent.
Only comes into play during refueling

On a related issue, when I dropped the tank on my 53 Hornet, I broke off the nipple that is on the tank vent. I haven't been able to remove the little round vent from the tank (it seems to be welded into the tank). Any suggestion on how to fix or replace the nipple or the vent device?

Ok, So its purpose is for refueling but not as a vent for gas flow to the fuel pump. That would be the vent hole in the cap itself, right?0

Yes the vented caps are what lets air into the tank during operation,

That is a vent tube, for with out that line you could not put gas into the tank fast and if blocked it will take 5 minutes to put in 3 gallons of gas. Walt.0
