49 Overdrive Wiring HELP

I got pretty much all of the new wiring in on my 49, and the only issue I have not been able to sort out is with the Overdrive relay. The new harness from YNZ has 6 wires that go to the overdrive relay on the firewall. The wiring diagram shows this to be correct. That being said, the relay I have only has 4 prongs on the back. Do I have the wrong relay or is there some type of plug that I need to wire these 6 wires into??? I dont have anything to go on, as I am adding overdrive dont have an old sample to look at.

Thoughts, or better yet, pictures will be greatly appreciated.

  • when the club copied the instructions for od wiring they made the mistake of thinking all years were the same 1948 and 1949 only had for prongs. you need to get wiring diagram for those years
  • ken cates page has the diagram it says 1950 51
  • I have a 48-49 diagram I can send you whats your email?

My 49 has a round plug at the relay. You will need that type relay to be correct. Later, they simplified the wireing to only use the four individual connections.

SuperDave is right ... the overdrive electrical control system was changed for '50, with the "new" system using a simpler relay and also a four-terminal kickdown switch instead of the earlier two-terminal one. I prefer using this '50 and later system because it eliminates the special, more complex (and getting harder to find) relays used in '41-'49. The four-terminal kickdown switch is available on special order from NAPA, for less than $20 (Part OD 6284). The '48-49 OD solenoid can be used with the later wiring system by addition of a simple jumper wire from solenoid terminal 3 to 4.
  • Thanks to all. I like the idea of using the 4 prong relay and thanks for the NAPA tip. This is all great info, but I will need to know which of the two wires to eliminate. My harness has 6 wires, not 4. I guess I could just compare it to the 50 diagram....
