8 cyl gasket stack

Perhaps I'm missing this info from another thread but how many gaskets go under the fuel pump on a step-down era Hudson 8 cyl ? How many gaskets go under the carburator ? Are there gaskets on either side of the carb heat shield or just one side?

For the Carburetor, Shop Service Manual, Section 4 Pg 26, Fig 95

4 Gaskets below the heat deflector and 4 above.
  • Mostof the fuel pumps have about 5/16 inch stack of gaskets. The carb will have 6 gaskets ,3 with metal heat shield then 3 more. The 6 & 8 were the same as were the Twin -H motor

  • All engines, 6 or 8's, put 4 on then the heat shield and 4 more. Now this was with Hudson style gaskets which is not todays gaskets as they have different thickness. Just install gaskets and place carb on top and the studs should be about 1/4 inch showing. Place heat shield in the middle of the gaskets, then carb and tighten down evenly. Walt.
  • Aaron,

We have them in stock if needed.

I suspected that the gaskets went on either side of the heat shield. Needed the confirmation for a member who among other things has a vapor lock problem and said he only had one gasket under the heat shield. Although I'm sure there's other causes the right stack on the carb and the fuel pump would help. Thanks for the responses... got one question.

If he were to make a fuel return line to aid in cooling it would it go between the carb and fuel pump ? Would it be better to simply re-route the fuel line way out of the way of the manifold? Does modern gas vapor lock easier?

I'd recommend the 4 gaskets - heat shield - 4 gaskets approach, even for the pre-StepDown cars. I have that setup on my '37, even though I had to install longer threaded studs to make room for the extra gaskets. I have never had any kind of vapor lock problem even when idling on the hottest days (like in a parade). In fact, I had installed an electric fuel pump on my car back in the 70's and later went back to the mechanical pump, with no problems.

If your friend is having vapor lock problems he might also want to wrap the fuel line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb, with today's version of asbestos. And even wrap the exhaust pipe as well, which will shield the carb from all that excess heat.
