Body style: Convertible

Convertibles make for fun driving and all modern convertibles owe their origin to the Ben B. Ellerbeck’s ’22 Hudson Super Six. Using the car as the basis for his invention, he built what is thought to be the first retractable hardtop for a car. To operate the top, users had to maneuver a crank handle located at the rear of the passenger door. Later, Georges Paulin built another retractable hardtop system which was then used by Peugeot by 1934.

Very good article - I noted a Ford Model T couple led the parade, but they didn't give the year - probably an early model. Hudson also had a coupe as early as 1912 (Model 33). The 1916 Super Six lineup included a Cabriolet with a folding top.

The Hudson Historical Society recent newsletter has a great article that features a bit of the history of Ellerbeck. Good reading on a cold snowy day like today.

I'm guessing that -- like the '57-59 Ford retractibles -- the luggage compartment was minimal!
