Alright....it's been a while.....way too long, but I've made a "schmidge" of progress on my '49 in the past few weeks. here's some pics.

Here's the cancer as purchased. this is below the trunk lid pretty much on the centerline of the car. Obviously the owner had dragged the ass-end over something cause it was a bit torn up too. Lance (aka Hudzilla) on the forum sold me the center section I needed. I think he charged me $45 and the area I needed was rust free.

And here's a picture from the inside. Luckily most of the cancer was confined to the one location.

So I sliced it out and lined up the new one and marked it (you can see the new piece sitting in the trunk at the top of the picture).

With the new segement marked for cutting, fired up the bandsaw and cut it down to size.

I cut it a little long, then ground it to fit.

I needed to pull the cut ends down to properly "gap" the trunk lid, so I temp welded a channel across the bottom and used c-clamps to get everything lined up (you can also see a 2x2 board inside holding one end out a little).

Once I had it fitting nicely, it was obvious that manufacturing tolerance came into play. The inner frame channel on the new piece was welded in a 1/4" lower than mine....damn now what.
img_7111.jpg

So I fire up the mill with a 1/4" flat bottom cutter and drilled out the spot welds to separate the parts.

Here's everything pulled appart.

Now I'm lining up each piece individually getting ready to weld them back in.

I'll put up some more pics shortly.

Looks good! Your planning on MIG welding it together then? I'm guessing from the square line-up clamp thingys.

    More pictures. :)
