New Owner of a 31 Essex Coupe

Just delivered today. Started her up and she runs. YEA! When for a ride around the block :ohmy: Looks like I have a little problem with the carb not letting enough gas flow. Question? Can I run a model A ford updraft carb? What model if anyone knows I would appreciate it. Here are some pictures!

I don't quite understand your problem in re "not enough gas flow"? It should have an updraft carb. with a vacuum tank. If you aren't getting enough fuel to the carb. then it's the vacuum tank not pulling enough up from the gas tank.
In re the carb. itself you can get rebuild kits from guys who specialize in old carbs.
I would think the Essex engine has a lot more displacement than a Model A so wouldn't get enough fuel from a carb. designed for a smaller engine, but "what do chickens know" about Frauds, LOL????????

Thanks for the feedback. It does not have a vacuum tank it has a electric fuel pump. Well I thought maybe a quick fix like replacing the carb might have me up and running in no time. Then again, that is what I thought when I pulled the engine out of the 41 six months ago too.:ohmy:

OK, let's analyze your problem, or potential problem.
Elec. fuel pumps put out way more fuel than that carb. needle & seat can handle = fuel spilling out.
Does it have it's orig. updraft carb.?
You might consider going back to the use of a vacuum tank. Your car looks like a nice original car & a '31 E cp. must be pretty rare so keeping, or putting it back to, original a good thought. Vac. tanks easy to come by, easy to rebuild, and the gas tank line probably either still there or in use with elec. pump.
Vac. tanks are quite efficent, work well, exc. going up steep grades, mountains.
What a lot of guys do is continue to use the vac. tank as it works best with the original carburetion, BUT, have an elec. pump back by the tank with an on/off switch under the dash to be used in emergency: if lack of gas flow, hit the switch for a few seconds & that will fill the vac. tank, and as gas just flows by gravity to your carb., voila!

I'm a bit confused. Does your Essex have its original engine? If so, why not post this question out in the 'regular' Hudson Forum, as there will be Essex owners there who won't see your note here in the Street Rod section. And they might be able to help you.
