We have a local rebuilder here that I use . Hes a Packard guy and real good but you would have to ship it to him,

Have you tried just a regular local auto electric shop? I had my '37 starter rebuilt maybe 15 years ago at a "modern" shop, didn't seem to phase them.0

I am sure there is someone here that can at least come up with a core. I know I have a few starters sitting on the shelf for manual trans Hudsons, but not sure about years. Does 49-50 have the solenoid mounted to the starter?0

Here's a remanufactured one on Ebay, though it's a bit pricey. And -- sadly for your friend -- it's in Massachusetts, not Marseille....
