1949 Hudson Commodore Fuel Tank... I need one bad!

Hey all, i just joined your group. I inherited a nice 1949 Hudson Commodore from my Dad a few years back. We've about got it ready to roll again (all stock), but the fuel tank is shot. After an exhaustive search I have not been able to find an aftermarket unit that will fit, and the one guy that sold me one online sold me a piece of junk. Does anyone have a good fuel tank, or know where I could find one? Thanks in advance. Rick

Hi Rick, welcome to the forum. You will get more help with your Hudson request by posting on the Hudson forum. The Hudson forum is what most Hudsonites check out. If you look at the collum on the right of the screen you will see Hudson below Orphaned Marques. Click on Hudson and that will put you onto the Hudson forum. You might check with Vintage Coach 909-823-9168, they may have one. I hope this helps.

    Have a good day.

Where are you located? Many of us are hoarders of Hudson parts and I am sure there is someone near you with a tank.

Rick, quite a number of Hudson owners have taken their tanks (or what's left of them) to a franchise called Gas Tank Renu. For maybe $400, they will patch the tank, clean it out, and coat it inside and outside so it will never rust again. You can go online to find the nearest one to you: http://gastankrenu.com/ . Now, $400 to merely repair a gas tank, seems like a lot of money. And it is. But sadly, no one has either found an interchange nor gone into business re-making these.

(Seems kind of strange that no one offers a repro; there is certainly a demand, though not anywhere near as great as that for '57 Chevy tanks. But could it really be that expensive to maybe take a repro tank for a particular year Chevy and splice a Ford filler pipe on it, or whatever it takes?)

you can call Ricks Tanks at 915-760 4388 or go on line at www.rickstanks.com
He made one for my 46 and it fit just like the orig. (stainless only)
He has a 1954 tank in the shop now and i think that the filler pipe is smaller than the 48-53. Hope this helps. Rudy

Chip, I just went to the Discount Fuel Systems website to look for the gas tanks there, but the "Start Here" thingie doesn't even list Hudsons! Is there a secret word, or do you maybe have to call the number and tell 'em Groucho sent ya, in order to get to the Hudson stuff?

call with size, filler neck location, ect. so they can match it maybe chip
  • Hey All, thanks for the helpful comments. I called Ricks Tanks, and they have a pattern for a 49 Hudson stepdown, but it's $675 plus $75 shipping. That is a lot of $ for a gas tank. I live in Brookings, South Dakota. Any of you guys near here with a good tank for sale? If not I may try getting it rebuilt. I have a call into Vintage Coach in CA as well, but havent heard back from them yet. Rick

Rick , you'll need another hundred to fill it up ! LOL
When I first started in Hudsons you could buy them for less than it costs to fill the tank today.

Wonder if Rick's would do a "group" buy discount?
  • Kdancy, it's worth an ask. I ended up ordering a refurbished one from Vintage Coach in CA. His prices were fare, and I know it will be the right fit for my Commodore. Out of all of the things I've fixed on that car the fuel tank was the biggest pain in the butt for sure, but it'll be nice to have it taken care of. No more gas smell.
