Pacemaker heater valve installation

A question re fitting a heater valve to the inside of the firewall - does this attached directly against the firewall or is it stepped out with a thick rubber gasket or such like? I have another plate that looks like it should fit over the pipes on the engine bay side of the firewall but the two could only be used if the valve was stepped back. The length of the screws attached to the valve also indicate this may be the case. If so, what was the packing was used to step it off the firewall.

There is a gasket between the plate and the firewall on the engine side. I used the plate as a guide and cut a gasket from a piece of 1/16" thick cork/rubber gasket material. May have similar gasket on passengers side, but not certain. KGap may have them but just as easy to make one.

I have taken a photo of the components I have. See the long screws and the front plate. Both line up with holes in the firewall. So that's why I thought that the valve unit was stepped back off the firewall - there as approx an inch between. Make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree.

The original Hudson firewall heat/noise insulation pad is about an inch thick and the heater valve mounts on the passenger side of it and protrudes thru the firewall. If your original pad has been replaced by some newer space-age material that is considerable thinner then I suggest making up a spacer.

You should also consider having your Ranco Valve reconditioned. I found a guy online, who happened to be about 15 miles from, me who rebuilds Ranco Valves. I took mine to him, it is not cheap, but the things are 60 years old and it will prevent having wet feet anytime soon. I will dig out his information and post it here.

Anyone know where the capillary tube is suppose to go? I installed mine but just coiled up the capillary tube since I was unsure of where it went. The heat works very well in the car so I was not sure what the function of the tubing is.

The capillary tube is just supposed to be back in the general area where the heater is. It apparently keeps track of the temperature somehow. Sort of a mystery. Hey Richard I use Lance Walker. He's a lot cheaper than Tucker and he's an HET guy. He's in the WTN directory .

Hudzilla, thanks for the tip. I have all the Ranco Valves that I will need for now, but I am sure that others will find this helpful. I enjoyed meeting up with Jim Tucker, he is a native Escondidian (the town where I live) and he lives on a patch of land deep in the back country which is home to some very interesting old iron and he has a collection of British motorcycles. He is a real interesting guy and he does do good work.
